The Behaviour Management Process
(Summary)
Behaviour management strategies and consequences are based on social justice and equity. Proserpine State High School (PSHS) is committed to a whole school approach in providing a supportive school environment. Practices used to create such an environment are the Care Share and HPE program; Peer Tutoring, Peer Mediation and the “Be Safe” program; Learning Support Centre; Teacher Buddy and Teacher Mentoring systems. Also a broad range of subjects and extra-curricular activities are offered to all students. Staff and student commitment and involvement as well as support and interaction by the local community are an integral part of PSHS supportive learning environment. This Behaviour Management policy is also indicative of the school's commitment to the creation and maintenance of such an environment. Good behaviour is to be recognised and praised by all members of the school community. Important ways of encouraging students at PSHS include:
- Behavioural Expectations Matrix
- CARE Structure
- Teachers reward and encourage positive behaviour in the classroom.
- Positive Healthy Attitude Toward Our School award. (PHATOS awards – weekly).
- Use of behaviour precursors
- ‘Behaviour and Industry Certificates’ are issued on year level parades to those students whose behaviour has been excellent across their subjects.
- Gold Awards are issued on ‘Awards Night’ to students who demonstrate impeccable behaviour standards throughout the year.
- The Behaviour Incentive Program culminates in an end-of-year excursion for junior students that have demonstrated exemplary behaviour throughout the year.
- Excellent behaviour and industry, community involvement and service to the school are criteria for entry to the leadership pool, from which all student leadership positions (school captain, Executive of the student Council, etc) are filled.
The issue of student behaviour is a complex one and Proserpine State High School recognises its obligations as a place for learning both curricular and social (behavioural) skills. To this end our school will be implementing the Behaviour Expectations Matrix which emphasises to students, parents/caregivers and the community the standards of behaviour expected at Proserpine State High School.
The school acknowledges that mistakes are made by students as they learn a wide range of social/behavioural skills. It is important that our students learn from their mistakes and are able to replace inappropriate behaviours with acceptable ones as outlined in the matrix.
The four main expectations are:
- Be respectful
- Be responsible
- Be academically focussed and
- Be safe/caring.
The extent to which a student has acquired these skills is determined by examining the second page of the Matrix document – the Behaviour Benchmark Sheet. This sheet will be used to highlight to students the extent to which they have acquired the behaviour skills deemed necessary and important to our school
