Science

The Science faculty at Proserpine SHS has five modern, well-established laboratories. The Marine Education subject has been extended to include Junior Marine Studies and has been a very popular subject choice.

Although it is not the reason for doing Junior Science, the topics covered in years 8, 9 and 10 do provide some foundation for progressing into year 11 Chemistry, Physics, Biology and Marine Studies.

The 'Barra Farm'

Proserpine State High has for a number of years operated a barramundi fish breeding program in cooperation with Whitsunday Shire (now Regional) Council and Sunwater. The program gives students valuable insights into the world of Biology in general and fish breeding and re-stocking in particular. Link to the 'Barra Farm'.

YEAR 11/12 Science

Students choosing Chemistry, Biology or Physics must be aware of one assessment item that involves a specific and mandatory senior (Year 11/12) science report called an Extended Experimental Investigation. This involves designing and conducting an experiment to test a hypothesis, and writing a scientific report on the investigation.

Marine Education

Semester II year 10 Marine Education is a continuation of units that contribute to TDM20307: Certificate II in Transport and Distribution (Coastal Maritime Operations – Coxswain). These units follow on from Semester I year 10 and therefore students cannot do Semester II year 10 Marine Education unless they have done Semester I year 10 Marine Education.
