Studies of Society and Environment
Geography is the study of the earth as the home of humanity. Therefore, in Geography, we study the ways people have shaped, are shaping and will potentially shape the environment to suit their needs. Consequently this subject also studies how people and cultures are, in turn, shaped by their environment. In essence it gives students a “big picture” view of the planet and a perspective of their place on it.
Senior Geography focuses on current, important environmental and social issues in local, national and global settings. Students also learn decision-making skills so that they may more effectively participate in creating a better world for the future, by researching and designing practical and creative solutions to address these issues. In this way Geography is a very positive subject which shows that despite the problems facing our planet, we can make a difference both in our career paths and personal lives.Economics studies scarcity – limited resources, unlimited wants. Put another way, as individuals, as communities, states or nations we can never have enough money. Therefore we must make choices on how to spend the limited amount of money that we have. Our planet has resources – water, raw materials, and people with creative abilities. Economics studies the way in which these are combined to satisfy our needs and wants and provide all people with a standard of living. This is known as an economic system.
It complements other senior subjects such as Business Communication, Accounting, Maths, Geography, IPT, English and History.
